This panel is one of Westmont's weekly discussion Tuesdays with Morals series
which provides an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to wrestle with
morally complex issues and tackle issues that require different perspectives.

Judy Guillermo-Newton (ethics in banking), John Zant (ethics in the media), and Mark French (ethics in athletics).

A Tibetan monk, the Dalai Lama is a spiritual leader who has traveled extensively to promote ethics and
policies of non-violence worldwide. He has received nearly 90 awards and honorary doctorates in recognition
of his message of peace, non-violence, inter-religious understanding, universal responsibility and compassion.
He is a winner of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize, and the first Nobel Laureate to be recognized for his concern
for global environmental problems.
The two lectures will be,
"The Nature of Mind" (9:30-11:30 a.m.) and "Ethics for Our Time" (2:00-4:00 p.m.); tickets will go on sale
Saturday, December 6, 2008. NOTE: both lectures are SOLD OUT.

Ombuds Reading Group Discussion of Ethics for the New Millennium
The Office of the Ombuds has formed a reading group in order to have
informal discussions about "Ethics for a New Millenium" by the Dalai Lama.
There will be three discussions, one for each section of the book. This will be Part III: Ethics and Society.

Lecture: Tibetan Medicine and Healing Arts: An Introduction
An introduction to the history, literature, physiology, diagnosis, and treatment techniques of Tibetan
medicine. The lecture will also examine the education system for traditional Tibetan doctors in India.

The Universe of a Deity: A Tibetan Sand Mandala
A mandala is a representation of the palace and universe of an enlightened being.
Mandalas can be painted on cloth, made from colored sands, or constructed as three-dimensional objects.
During their visit to UCSB, the monks from the Gandan Shartse Monastery will create a mandala made from colored
sand particles. Visitors are invited to watch the monks work. Please check the Dalai Lama's visit programming
website for the the monks work schedule.

A special screening of Martin Scorcese's Kundun, an epic film about the life of the Dalai Lama up to the
time of his exile, will be presented by Magic Lantern Films in Isla Vista, next to the UCSB campus. Please check

Why the Dalai Lama Matters
Previously named one of the 25 most influential Americans by Time magazine, Robert Thurman
is the Jey Tsong Khapa Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies in the Department of Religion at Columbia
University and celebrated author of numerous books including Why the Dalai Lama Matters. Pico Iyer is an
acclaimed and perceptive observer of Asia and Buddhism and the author of several books including Abandon,
The Global Soul and The Open Road. Together, these scholar-activists will reflect on the Dalai Lama's
ideas and work as a religious leader, politician, scientist, and philosopher.

During these times of great global change, many of us wonder how to make a positive
contribution to the world while taking care of ourselves and our many responsibilities. Do we focus
our energies on academics or activism? Personal spiritual growth or professional advancement? Money or art?
Caitríona Reed, meditation teacher and organizational consultant, will challenge these dichotomies and offer
concrete tools for integrating the many aspects of your life purpose. Caitríona’s meditation will provide skills
for expanded awareness and focus drawn from traditional Buddhist meditation and neuroscience. Her workshop will
explore the five changes that can lead to individual and community transformation: 1) Personal development;
2) Non-dogmatic spiritual practices; 3) Social and environmental justice; 4) Real-world financial skills; and 5)
Creativity.

On-air reading of UCSB Reads featured book
The UCSB campus radio station, KCSB at 91.9FM, will be presenting an on-air reading
of the selected book for UCSB Reads: the Dalai Lama's, Ethics for the New Millennium. The readings will
begin March 30 and end just before the Dali Lama's appearance in Santa Barbara on April 24.
Various people will be reading the book--join them each weekday at noon. Also available through online
webcast at www.kcsb.org.

Creating Buddhas is Isadora Gabrielle Leidenfrost's film about Leslie Rinchen Wangmo,
an American woman who spent nine years in India studying the art of making fabric thangkas. The artist is expected to
